Holiday Message 2009
giving Thanks
My favorite thing about the holidays is that it’s a time when people - not usually so disposed - are moved, however reluctantly, to think about what others need, and to give. Indeed, the season is filled with bizarre behavior over shopping and buying, the frantic pursuit of the latest version of the new “whatzit.” But for all that, giving to others is stirred up in hearts often nine months or more out of practice.
And this taking place always has a curative effect for the giver. I believe that the act of sincere giving is the most personally therapeutic act a person can do. And reluctant giving is along the way, too, I believe. To give of your best is like a deep, cleansing breath at a higher level of existence. Giving with your heart / mind open confirms the truth of you, broadens your view beyond personal limits and illuminates the path you are meant to follow.
When I think back on the gifts I have received, the most memorable ones are those times when I received someone’s undivided attention when I needed to talk something out. These have been not only memorable, but life changing, perhaps life saving. I try to remember this when I’m asked to listen.
I am grateful every day for listeners, especially the community of my Prosperos friends, where I have received so many “gifts of attention” over the years. I know that many are not so fortunate.
I am deeply grateful to all of you, and I wish you an open heart this season and in all our days ahead.
Aloha,
Al Haferkamp
