Machinations: A lesson request from the book "Room to Write"
Machinations
Consider the button. It can be a small or large tool, if you will. When sewn adjacent to a slit or a loop, it is used to connect one side to another...if you are nimble enough to slide the button through the hole, that is. It's used to hold two sections of clothing together to achieve a closure. It's used mostly to hold clothing onto bodies, but it can also be used as a decorative device on pillows and a variety of crafts.
It compares beautifully to human nature as a way to achieve closure by connecting two separate mindsets or opinions to achieve a cohesiveness in thought, and possibly a pathway to closure of a problem. Human nature can work in such a way to sync thoughts, bringing them together. The button's entire existence is to hold things together, much like R.H.S. and Translations.
